The coupling of the ebullient Tchaikovsky with dark Prokofiev was an admirably imaginative one. ‘Though the two concertos on the disc are very different, there are in fact also similarities when you listen to one after the other,’ says Rana. ‘The inspiration of Prokofiev’s Second Concerto is that of a composer in his early twenties – you can really hear the dramatic approach to life and death. He was the same age when he wrote it that I was when I recorded it, so I feel very close to it.’
